Testo di Bob Geldof e musica di Midge Ure Do They Know Its Christmas? è una canzone pubblicata il 3 dicembre 1984 dalla Band Aid, nome scelto come gioco di parole riferito marca di cerotti. Fu un grandissimo successo, vendette un milione di copie in una sola settimana e con più di tre milioni di copie fu il singolo più venduto di tutti i tempi in Inghilterra per un lungo periodo.
La Band Aid era composta da un supergruppo creato per scopi benefici e composto da artisti tra i più di successo dell’epoca. L’esperienza si è ripetuta con la Band Aid II nel 1989, con la Band Aid 20 nel 2004 e oggi con la Band Aid 30.
La versione del trentennale ha un testo leggermente rivisto e lo scopo è quello di raccogliere fondi per combattere il virus dell’ebola. La Band Aid 30 è composta da Bastille, Bono (U2), Clean Bandit, Disclosure, Alfie Deyes, Elbow, Paloma Faith, Fuse ODG, Nick Grimshaw, Ellie Goulding, Angelique Kidjo, Chris Martin (Coldplay), Olly Murs, Sinead O’Connor, One Direction, Rita Ora, Emeli Sande, Seal, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Joe Sugg, Zoe Sugg, Underworld, Jessie Ware.
